Heroes of Newerth: A Potential Resurgence?
Following its 2022 shutdown, the classic MOBA Heroes of Newerth (HoN) is sparking comeback rumors. Recent activity on HoN's social media accounts, dormant for over three years, hints at a possible revival. While nothing's confirmed, the developer's renewed online presence has ignited fervent speculation among fans.
The MOBA genre exploded after the success of Dota, a Warcraft 3 mod. The core gameplay—two teams vying to destroy each other's base—quickly captivated gamers. League of Legends, Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm, and HoN emerged as leading titles in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Unfortunately, HoN ultimately couldn't maintain its competitive edge, leading to its server closure. However, recent developments suggest a potential return.
Personally, in MOBAs, I favor the top/off-lane bruiser role. Aatrox and Mordekaiser (League of Legends) and Axe, Sven, or Tidehunter (Dota 2) are among my favorites. If that role's unavailable, I'm adaptable, preferring ranged carry to mid or support.
The first indication of a possible HoN resurgence came via a social media post. The official Twitter account, silent since its December 2021 shutdown announcement, recently posted a "Happy NEW Year" message (note the capitalized "NEW"). Furthermore, the HoN website now features a subtly animated silhouette of the game's logo.
This renewed online activity didn't go unnoticed. Nostalgia flooded in from long-time players, alongside hopeful (and slightly skeptical) comments like, "Don't give me hope." Adding fuel to the fire, a subsequent post—an image of a cracking egg—further intensified speculation. Theories range from HoN hero integration into Dota 2 to a potential mobile port.
The recent social media flurry demonstrates the enduring interest in HoN. The developer's intentions remain unclear, but the possibilities are exciting. Should the rumors prove true, HoN's re-entry into the competitive MOBA landscape will be fascinating to observe.
