DC's upcoming film adaptation of The Authority faces setbacks, according to DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. Initially announced as a major project within Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters, the film has been placed "on the back burner."
Gunn cited the project's complexity and the existing landscape of similar superhero properties, particularly Amazon's The Boys, as contributing factors to the delays. He acknowledged the challenges of adapting The Authority's notoriously brutal style while maintaining consistency with the broader DC Universe and other projects already underway. Existing character arcs and planned interactions within the DCU further complicate the timeline.
While The Authority is currently sidelined, The Engineer, a powerful member of the team, is slated to appear in the upcoming Superman film. For more on The Authority's characters, see IGN's explainer.
Other Chapter 1 projects are also experiencing challenges. Waller, a spin-off of Peacemaker, has faced production setbacks. However, Booster Gold is progressing well, and Paradise Lost remains a priority. Swamp Thing, meanwhile, is on hold pending the availability of director James Mangold, and its development is not considered crucial to the overall DCU narrative.
