Indie developer Cellar Door Games releases Rogue Legacy 1's source code for free. The company announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the code is available for download, promoting knowledge sharing within the game development community.
Open Source, but with Limitations
The source code, hosted on GitHub and managed by Ethan Lee, is released under a non-commercial license. This allows for personal use and study but restricts commercial applications. While the code itself is freely accessible, the game's assets (art, music, icons) are not included and remain under copyright. Cellar Door Games encourages contacting them for inquiries about using these assets.
This generous move ensures the game's long-term accessibility, safeguarding against potential delisting from online stores and contributing to digital game preservation. The Rochester Museum of Play's Director of Digital Preservation has even expressed interest in partnering with Cellar Door Games.
The developer's GitHub page clearly states the intent: to facilitate learning, inspire new projects, and enable the creation of tools and modifications for Rogue Legacy 1. Any use outside the license terms, or incorporating assets not included in the release, requires direct communication with Cellar Door Games.
