KCD2 hit the 1 million sales mark on its launch day, and with its impressive Steam sales, it's on track to reach 2 million copies sold.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Attention to Detail
The remarkable success of KCD2's opening weekend can be attributed to Warhorse Studios' meticulous attention to detail, enhancing immersion and player enjoyment. The series is renowned for its commitment to realism, with features like food spoilage, the need to clean clothes and armor, and the necessity of sharpening swords. KCD2 takes this a step further by introducing elements that deepen the medieval experience.
KCD2's Senior Game Designer, Ondřej Bittner, highlighted a new stealth mechanic to GamesRadar. Bittner noted that as players accumulate dirt and grime, they can acquire a debuff that signals their presence through body odor. "If you get the debuff, you know, your body odour, you smell. There's like a circle around you," he explained, adding, "Basically, you're broadcasting, like, I'm here."
The game also introduces "handgonnes," a historically accurate depiction of early firearms. In a conversation with PC Gamer, Bittner described these weapons as challenging to use, with long reload times, inaccuracy, and safety concerns. "So we knew it was going to be a meme weapon, but we were cool with it," he admitted.
KCD2's PR Manager, Tobias Stolz-Zwilling, emphasized the game's focus on authenticity over hyperaccuracy. "We want to have an intriguing and cool and fun and nice videogame. However, we try extremely hard to make it as authentic as possible. We double check the stuff, so that when the player plays it, or whenever someone checks it, that the things that are listed in there are at least plausible," he stated.
Post-Launch Roadmap
Warhorse Studios has outlined a post-launch roadmap to keep the community engaged. KCD2 will offer free updates and paid DLC content throughout 2025.
The free updates include the Barber feature, Hardcore mode, and Horse Racing, slated for release in Spring 2025. Paid DLCs will start rolling out in the Summer with "Brushes with Death," followed by "Legacy of the Forge" in Autumn, and "Mysteria Ecclesiae" in Winter.
With its stellar opening weekend and a robust roadmap, KCD2 is poised to continue its commercial success, potentially setting new records along the way.
