Yakuza Series Reborn in Live-Action!

Sega and Prime Video unveiled a captivating teaser for their upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular Yakuza game series, now titled "Like a Dragon: Yakuza." This article delves into the teaser, director Masayoshi Yokoyama's insights, and what fans can expect from this highly anticipated series.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza Debuts October 24th

A fresh interpretation of Kazuma Kiryu and his world is promised. The teaser, debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, introduced Ryoma Takeuchi as the iconic Kazuma Kiryu and Kento Kaku as the antagonist, Akira Nishikiyama. Director Yokoyama highlighted the unique approach taken by the actors: "Their portrayal is completely different from the original," he stated in a Sega interview, adding, "But that's precisely what makes it exciting." While acknowledging the game's perfected portrayal of Kiryu, Yokoyama praised the series for presenting a novel perspective on both characters. The teaser offered glimpses of iconic locations like the Coliseum in Underground Purgatory and a confrontation with Futoshi Shimano.

The teaser description promises a portrayal of "fierce yet passionate gangsters and the inhabitants of Kamurochō," a fictional district inspired by Kabukichō. Loosely based on the first game, the series explores Kiryu's life and his childhood friends, promising to reveal aspects of Kiryu's story previously unexplored in the games.

Director Yokoyama's Perspective

Initial fan concerns about the adaptation's ability to capture the game's lighter moments were addressed by Yokoyama, who assured fans that the Prime Video series will retain "aspects of the original's essence." He emphasized his desire to avoid mere imitation, stating, "I wanted people to experience Like a Dragon as if it were their first encounter." He expressed his surprise and delight at the final product, commenting, "It was so good, I was jealous. They made the setting, created 20 years ago, their own… yet they didn’t neglect the original story." Yokoyama teased a major surprise at the end of the first episode, promising a genuinely shocking moment.

While the teaser provides only brief glimpses, the wait is short. "Like a Dragon: Yakuza" premieres exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on October 24th, with the first three episodes released simultaneously. The remaining three episodes will follow on November 1st.
