EDR "Blackbox" Scan Tool & PDF Accident Reports for Collision Investigators
WHEN INVESTIGATING A VEHICLE COLLISION
Use the CrashScan App with the OBDLink MX+ Bluetooth adapter to scan the vehicle's computer modules, including the Event Data Recorder (EDR), also known as the "blackbox," when supported (see compatibility below). CrashScan assists investigators in identifying, capturing, and analyzing stored prior accident data. This crash data helps validate auto insurance claims and serves as a key indicator for determining liability or investigating suspicious collision claims.
VEHICLE SUPPORT
(Event Data Recorder & Full System Diagnostic Scan)
Over 3000 unique year, make, and model combinations are supported internationally. Verify compatibility here:

CONTEXTUAL ACCIDENT REPORTS
If the CrashScan is successful, the report includes impact severity, impact direction (front, rear, or side impact), and contextual details such as:
- Accident severity classification: minor, moderate, or severe
- Details on EDR trigger thresholds
- 5 seconds of pre-crash data: vehicle speed, brake and accelerator pedal use, and steering input
- Occupant count and seatbelt status
- Estimated repair cost (economic impact in USD)
- Indication of potential structural crush damage
- Injury risk assessment (whiplash, injury duration)
- Typical g-forces from daily activities for comparison
*Injury risk algorithms utilize recorded acceleration values, scientific literature, and databases such as the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS)

PRIVACY LEGISLATION STATUS (EDR DATA)
Canada: No specific legislation; EDR data is considered diagnostic and non-private. However, insurers typically obtain consent as a best practice.
United States: The federal Driver Privacy Act of 2015, enacted in December 2015, restricts EDR data retrieval and states that the data belongs to the vehicle owner or lessee. Seventeen states have enacted EDR privacy laws: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. These laws generally require vehicle owner or policyholder consent for data download, with specific
exceptions.
