Each player starts with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each piece type has unique movement rules. The goal is to checkmate the opponent's king—placing it in a position where capture is unavoidable. A player may also win by their opponent's resignation, often due to significant material loss or an imminent checkmate.
