A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on the often-overlooked Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Unlike the readily available Nintendo Switch Online GBA games, this list highlights ten standout titles – four GBA and six DS – found outside the subscription service. No specific ranking is implied. Let's dive in!
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this GBA version is a solid alternative. A worthwhile play for comparison's sake, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, appealing even to non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Part of Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a worthy successor. This first entry lays the foundation for an excellent side-scrolling action series, though it might feel slightly rough around the edges compared to later installments. Start here, and feel free to explore the rest of the series.
Mega Man Battle Network – Part of Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double feature! Mega Man Zero and Battle Network offer vastly different gameplay experiences, both excelling in their respective styles. Battle Network is an RPG with a unique action-strategy battle system. The clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries saw diminishing returns, the first game provides ample fun.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Part of Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
Another collection worthy of playing through completely, but Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite. For the right mood, it even surpasses the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. The soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is so engaging that the grinding feels rewarding. A truly exceptional third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky's Revenge – Director's Cut ($9.99)
The original Shantae gained cult status, but limited distribution hindered its reach. Shantae: Risky's Revenge, initially released on DSiWare, propelled the Half-Genie Hero into the spotlight. Its success has ensured Shantae's continued presence across generations. Interestingly, this title's origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Part of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not initially localized), Ace Attorney needs no introduction. These adventure games blend investigation and dramatic courtroom scenes with humorous writing and engaging stories. The first game is exceptional, though later entries also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick boasts equally strong writing and unique gameplay. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people and unravel the mystery of your own death. A captivating and rewarding experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
Considered one of the best Nintendo DS games, The World Ends With You shines brightest on its original hardware. While ports may not perfectly replicate the experience, the Switch version offers a viable alternative for those without a DS. A truly exceptional game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Part of Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all the DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the updated button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three DS titles in this collection are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Part of Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus's Switch adaptation is surprisingly playable. Each Etrian Odyssey game stands alone, offering substantial RPG experiences. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a worthwhile challenge despite its complexities.
