The Wheel of Time has come to a halt on Prime Video, as Amazon officially cancels the series following the conclusion of Season 3. According to Deadline, after what was described as “lengthy deliberations,” Prime Video has decided not to move forward with Season 4. While executives reportedly appreciate the show, they were ultimately unable to make the financials work.
Based on Robert Jordan’s acclaimed fantasy novel series, *The Wheel of Time* stars Rosamund Pike in a leading role. The show initially faced backlash from book fans during its first two seasons due to notable deviations from the source material. However, Season 3 managed to win over much of the fanbase and was seen as a turning point that could have led to even greater success in future seasons.
For many fans, the cancellation comes as a major disappointment—especially considering how much of *The Wheel of Time*’s expansive story remains untold. In many ways, the series was just beginning to hit its stride.
Unfortunately, production costs proved to be a significant hurdle for both co-producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios. The latter is also responsible for the high-budget series *The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power*, which likely influenced budgetary decisions around *The Wheel of Time*.
As reported by Deadline:
"... the Season 3 overall performance was not strong enough compared to the show’s cost for Prime Video to commit to another season and the streamer could not make it work after examining different scenarios and following discussions with lead studio Sony TV..."
IGN's review of *The Wheel of Time* Season 3 awarded it an 8/10, praising it as the moment when the show finally reached its full potential, delivering rich characters navigating Robert Jordan’s intricate fantasy universe.
Although the television adaptation has ended prematurely, there is still hope for fans elsewhere. A 'AAA open-world RPG' based on *The Wheel of Time* universe is currently in development. IGN recently spoke with iwot Studios—the team behind the game—to learn more about their vision for this new project.
