Gearbox Denies Launch Date Change is Influenced by Other Games
Prior to the State of Play, Gearbox Software announced an earlier release date for Borderlands 4, moving it up by two weeks due to "incredible development work." Despite this, fans speculated about underlying reasons, with many suggesting it was a strategic move influenced by the anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6).
Both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games, the developers of Borderlands and GTA respectively, fall under the umbrella of Take-Two Interactive. This connection fueled theories that the companies coordinated their release schedules, particularly after Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioned during a November 2024 earnings call that GTA 6 was slated for a Fall 2025 release, while Borderlands 4 was planned for the 2026 fiscal year.
However, Gearbox Entertainment CEO Randy Pitchford took to Twitter (X) on April 30 to refute these speculations. He emphasized that the decision to move up the release date was purely based on confidence in their product, stating, "Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date."
Regardless of the motivations behind the change, fans can look forward to experiencing Borderlands 4 sooner than anticipated. The game is set to launch on September 12, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. Stay tuned to our site for the latest updates on Borderlands 4!
