Avowed's Character Creation: A Deep Dive into Backgrounds
Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to customize their character's appearance and select a Background, shaping their backstory and initial narrative. This guide details each Background and its impact on gameplay.
Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each provides unique dialogue options and a starting weapon (all Common-quality, one-handed melee weapons), all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice.
Background Details:
-
Arcane Scholar: Hailing from Bragganhyl Academy, this scholar's treatise on soul lineages angered a local lord, leading to arrest. The Emperor, however, recognized their potential and recruited them for the imperial archives. Expect dialogue options reflecting knowledge of the occult, law, history, and poetry.
-
Court Augur: This character's visions and insights, misinterpreted after a village crop failure, led to a hasty escape to Highcrown. The Emperor appointed them as a personal mystic. Expect dialogue options reflecting spiritual awareness and interactions with magic and the Gods. Ideal for players envisioning a wizard-type character, and likely to find synergy with the companion Giatta.
-
Noble Scion: Born into wealth and influence but burdened by a family's scandalous downfall, this character seeks redemption under the Emperor's service. A perfect choice for players loyal to the empire and its goals within the Living Lands.
-
Vanguard Scout: Spared from execution, this character prefers the wilderness to courtly life. Their tracking and espionage skills make them valuable to the Emperor. This Background suits players favoring a hunter-style playthrough and might find common ground with the companion Marius.
-
War Hero: Having quelled a Skaenite uprising, this character earned a place among the Emperor's elite warriors. Loyalty and combat prowess are their hallmarks. This Background is ideal for players wanting a warrior-style character and may resonate with the companion Kai.
Starting Weapons:
Each Background starts with a low-quality, one-handed melee weapon found near a shipwreck during the "On Strange Shores" quest. The weapon type is:
- Arcane Scholar – Dagger
- Court Augur – Mace
- Noble Scion – Sword
- Vanguard Scout – Axe
- War Hero – Spear
Ultimately, the best Background is the one that best suits your desired roleplay experience, as the starting weapon's impact is minimal given its readily replaceable nature.
