505 Games and developer ArtPlay have unveiled Bloodstained: The Scarlet Engagement, a prequel to Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night set for release in 2026.
A Dark Prelude to Bloodstained
The story unfolds in 16th century England before the events of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, where a mysterious floating castle controlled by Demon Lord Elias spreads terror across the land. Players control two new protagonists: Leonard Brandon from the Church's Black Wolves clan and Alexander Kyteler of the Kingdom's White Stags.
Dual Protagonists and Expanded Gameplay
Players can switch between Leo and Alex during gameplay, unlocking new combat techniques while exploring what developers call the series' most expansive map to date. The game introduces dynamic day-night cycles affecting both visuals and gameplay mechanics, plus robust crafting, cooking, and customization systems.
From Castlevania's Creator
Helmed by Koji Igarashi (creator of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night), The Scarlet Engagement introduces fresh characters while maintaining connections to the original game's lore. The developers emphasize accessibility for newcomers despite these narrative ties.
Release Platforms and Timing
While lacking a specific launch date, The Scarlet Engagement is confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S in 2026.
Critical Reception of the Original
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night launched in 2019 to critical acclaim, earning an 8.8/10 score for its successful modernization of classic Castlevania elements.
Recent Gaming Announcements
The reveal follows Sony's recent PlayStation State of Play showcase, which included announcements for 007 First Light, Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Romeo is a Dead Man, and confirmation of Silent Hill f's release window.
