Ed Boon, the development chief of Mortal Kombat 1, has sparked excitement within the gaming community by sharing a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media. This reveal coincides with the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, marking a significant milestone as Mortal Kombat 1 has now surpassed five million copies sold, up from the previously reported four million.
The teaser clip of T-1000's Fatality showcases a thrilling moment reminiscent of the iconic chase scene from Terminator 2, where the T-1000 drives a smashed-up truck into his opponent. This nod to the film's fans adds an extra layer of excitement to the game's already robust roster of characters.
Boon's tweet about the T-1000 also hinted at "future DLC," igniting speculation among fans about additional content beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion. The expansion has already introduced several notable fighters, including Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian, with T-1000 Terminator being the final character in this set. The community is buzzing with anticipation for a potential Kombat Pack 3, especially given the game's strong sales performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm Studios, remains committed to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav emphasized the company's plan to focus on four key titles, one of which is Mortal Kombat. Furthermore, in September, Boon assured fans that NetherRealm had already decided on its next game three years prior but pledged ongoing support for Mortal Kombat 1 for the foreseeable future.
While many speculate that NetherRealm's next project could be a third installment in the Injustice series, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this. The Injustice franchise, which began with "Injustice: Gods Among Us" in 2013 and followed by "Injustice 2" in 2017, has been a significant part of NetherRealm's portfolio. However, the studio chose to release "Mortal Kombat 11" in 2019 and then "Mortal Kombat 1" in 2023, deviating from the expected alternation between the two series.
In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon shed some light on the decision to focus on another Mortal Kombat game. He cited the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine as key factors. "Mortal Kombat 11" used Unreal Engine 3, while "Mortal Kombat 1" runs on Unreal Engine 4, reflecting the team's desire to enhance the game's graphics and ensure safety during development.
When asked about the future of the Injustice series, Boon was clear: "Not at all" closed, indicating that fans can look forward to more from the DC fighting game franchise in the future.
