The 1976 classic Breakout receives a modern reinterpretation after nearly five decades. Breakout Beyond reinvents Atari's iconic brick-breaking formula by maintaining the core paddle-and-ball mechanics while introducing innovative sideways gameplay.
A Fresh Take on Retro Gameplay
Developed by Choice Provisions, the studio behind BIT.TRIP, Breakout Beyond features a left-to-right progression system while retaining the satisfying brick-breaking action. Players will experience increasingly dazzling visual effects as combo multipliers ramp up.
Enhanced Mechanics & Multiplayer
Special bricks unlock explosive power-ups, ranging from screen-clearing detonations to high-powered laser cannons. The game will launch with 72 structured levels plus an endless mode featuring global leaderboards. For shared enjoyment, local co-op supports two-player action.
From Stalled Project to Revival
Originally conceived as an Intellivision Amico exclusive in 2020, Breakout Beyond found new life after Atari acquired and completed development. "This ingenious concept preserves Breakout's essence while delivering fresh excitement," said Ethan Stearns, Atari's Senior Director of Games Publishing. "We're eager to see players master its inventive combos."
The Amico console announced in 2018 with planned 2020 release continues facing persistent setbacks and development hurdles. While Atari secured Intellivision's branding rights in 2023, it opted not to acquire the troubled console platform.
Breakout Beyond arrives this year on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Atari VCS platforms.
