Gellar Confirms Classic Characters' Return in Buffy Reboot

Author : Samuel Dec 22,2025

Sarah Michelle Gellar hopes the upcoming reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer will reunite the original ensemble—including all characters who met their demise.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gellar shared her vision for the new series: blending fresh story arcs with familiar faces, while adopting a more spirited tone compared to the heavier atmosphere of Seasons 6 and 7.

Besides serving as an executive producer, Gellar will appear in the reboot’s pilot episode before transitioning into a recurring role, as she hands the Slayer mantle over to new lead Ryan Kiera Armstrong. However, it seems she won’t be the only original cast member making a comeback.

“The tone will be lighter than the final seasons of the original,” Gellar explained. “We aim to strike a balance between new and returning characters. My dream is to resurrect everyone we’ve lost—though we also need to leave space for new stories.”

Gellar’s remarks mark the first hint that other beloved characters may reprise their roles, and the possibility of reviving deceased figures opens up exciting narrative directions.

While the original series rarely killed off main characters, later seasons saw heartbreaking losses—such as fan-favorite witch Tara, whose murder resonated deeply, and former demon Anya, who fell in the series finale.

Spinoff series Angel, however, featured more permanent departures—including characters introduced in Buffy. Cordelia, the cheerleader who evolved into a seer, met a poignant end in later episodes, and Wesley, the Watcher turned rogue demon hunter, fell in the finale.

Within the Buffy universe, death is seldom a final curtain. Many actors returned—or began—as undead, resurrected, or otherwise supernatural beings. Buffy herself died more than once, and several of her closest allies—and lovers—were vampires.

Gellar recently filmed a reunion video with former co-star Alyson Hannigan (who played Willow), dispelling long-standing rumors of a feud. Fans took this as a hopeful sign that Hannigan’s character might return—though nothing has been confirmed.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, starring Gellar, Hannigan, Nicholas Brendan as Xander, Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia, David Boreanaz as Angel, and Anthony Stewart Head as Giles. The series was created by Joss Whedon, who is not involved in the reboot.
