Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its monthly Captain America series with a fresh creative team and an exciting new story direction that delves into Steve Rogers' earliest days after being revived from suspended animation. This new series will explore Cap's very first encounter with the iconic villain, Doctor Doom, offering fans a unique glimpse into their initial clash.
Announced at the ComicsPro retailer convention, the series will be penned by the acclaimed writer Chip Zdarsky, known for his work on Batman and Daredevil, and illustrated by the talented Valerio Schiti, recognized for his contributions to G.O.D.S. and The Avengers. The vibrant colors will be handled by Frank D'Armata. This creative trio previously collaborated on the 2017 series Marvel 2-in-One, promising a seamless blend of storytelling and art.

The series kicks off shortly after Steve Rogers is discovered and defrosted in the modern Marvel era. Upon reenlisting in the US Army, Cap's first mission involves teaming up with the Howling Commandos to infiltrate Latveria, which has recently been taken over by a young and ambitious Doctor Doom. While the narrative will eventually transition to the present-day Marvel setting, the events of this initial story arc will significantly influence the ongoing narrative crafted by Zdarsky and Schiti.
“I’ve been a massive Captain America fan for decades. I loved writing the grizzled, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight, so getting to write the actual Captain America title feels like a dream!” Zdarsky expressed in a statement. “We’re exploring Cap’s early days in the modern era with a twist that I think is going to really surprise readers! I’m excited to share this with the world, especially with Valerio and Frank’s stunning art!”
Zdarsky further elaborated, “I’ve approached this title in the same way I approached my run on Daredevil, aiming to delve deeply into Cap’s mindset with a grounded, human perspective on who he is in this new world. Steve Rogers embodies the best of us, and I want that to be evident on every page.”
“Captain America is one of my all-time favorites,” Schiti shared. “Reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after our fantastic experience with Marvel 2-In-One, I'm working on a story that strikes the perfect balance between heart, action, and entertainment! What's most exciting and unexpected is how much I find myself focusing on Steve Rogers, not just Captain America."
Schiti added, “Chip's script is so clever and compelling that I’m confident readers will be drawn into Steve's heart and soul. He’s a man who became the living embodiment of truth, justice, and freedom. He fought a war against Nazism, 'died' in that war, and was brought back to life to continue his duty. That's a lot of pressure, and if you do the math, he’s only in his late twenties in the era we’re exploring!”
Captain America #1 is slated for release on July 2, 2025.
