The Battle of Hulao Gate marks the end of Chapter 2 in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*, with the ultimate goal of defeating Dong Zhuo. Reaching him won't be easy and could take longer than any previous mission.
Start by navigating through the four enemy bases located in the bottom right of the map. After conquering two bases, a cutscene will trigger, showing a mounted cavalry charging towards you from a hill. Stay focused on your strategy; you'll naturally take down the cavalry as you progress. Defeating their commander, Zhang Liao, rewards you with the twin pike weapon, enhancing your arsenal.
Once all bases are under your control, you can launch an assault on the gate, leading to your first significant battle against Dong Zhuo’s forces. It's a chaotic fight, but your primary objective is to protect Cao Cao until he executes his Grand Tactic. Once activated, many of the enemy defenses will crumble, allowing you to advance further towards Hulao Gate.
Lu Bu Appears
At this critical moment, Dong Zhuo deploys Lu Bu to the frontline. Under no circumstances should you engage Lu Bu directly. A one-on-one fight with him would be disastrous as he can easily overpower you. Instead, focus on eliminating enemy officers around the edges of the battlefield to maintain some level of morale, which Lu Bu's presence severely depletes.
Lu Bu will eventually move to attack your main base and attempt to defeat Yuan Shao. Despite the temptation to intervene, remember a key strategy from the *Dynasty Warriors* series – never pursue Lu Bu. Liu Bei and his forces will try to hold him off, giving you the time needed to focus on defeating Dong Zhuo. This scenario creates a time-sensitive challenge; Liu Bei’s army can only delay Lu Bu for so long. When the game indicates that Liu Bei has retreated, ensure you're close to defeating Dong Zhuo, or Lu Bu will overpower Yuan Shao and end the mission.
Go After Dong Zhuo
After Lu Bu leaves, quickly resupply at any conquered base if you need more meat buns to heal, then return to the gate. While Cao Cao prepares for his charge, secure the northern and western bases. With all three squads ready and your health fully restored, enter the closest commander’s circle and charge into battle.
You’ll face an immense army, and Dong Zhuo will unleash his Grand Tactic, hurling fireballs at you. Your goal is to destroy the front two catapults. If you have it, use Musou Rage to push through the soldiers blocking the catapults. Once you break their lines, eliminate the soldiers and officers around the catapults and barricade, allowing your forces to dismantle the catapults and end Dong Zhuo’s tactic.
As you advance, Dong Zhuo will initiate another fireball attack, this time requiring you to defeat one of his officers to stop it. Head up the right stairs to confront the officer, but be ready for an ambush by Diaochan, who has sided with Dong Zhuo. If possible, challenge her to a duel to avoid being overwhelmed by both her and the officer.
With the Grand Tactic thwarted, a clear path to Dong Zhuo awaits. Your forces should have enough morale to overwhelm his remaining troops, and Lu Bu should still be occupied with Liu Bei. Additionally, Dian Wei might initiate a Grand Tactic, further facilitating your victory. While tempting, avoid dueling Dong Zhuo directly; at this stage, he and his forces should be easily defeated.
And that’s how you conquer the Battle of Hulao Gate in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*! The game is now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
