Costumed Man Robs Shop, Police Seek Scooby-Doo

Author : Finn Jul 14,2025

The Tuscaloosa Police Department has turned to the public for assistance in identifying a peculiar suspect who robbed a local convenience store while dressed as Scooby-Doo. The unusual theft occurred last weekend at the Quick Stop located on Highway 82, where the suspect was captured on CCTV footage removing coins from arcade machines while wearing a full Scooby-Doo costume.

Surveillance video shows the suspect briefly taking off his cartoonish hood, but unlike the typical twist in the classic Hanna-Barbera series, this criminal mastermind had an extra layer of disguise — a balaclava covering his face beneath the costume. This unexpected precaution left investigators with little visual evidence to work with, prompting them to issue a call for public tips.

Details of the Suspect

According to police reports, the suspect is described as a white male approximately 5'9" in height. Authorities have not ruled out any theories and are currently investigating all possible leads. In a humorous nod to the Scooby-Doo franchise, officers joked, “Isn’t it always an old guy in a disguise?”

Footage released by the department shows the figure moving through the store just after 3:45am. Despite the cartoon-like appearance, the thief’s actions were very real — though strangely, he only took cash and coins, leaving behind the snacks untouched. A baffled officer quipped, “What, no munchies?”

Mystery Machine Spotted?

In a follow-up post on the Tuscaloosa Police Department's Facebook page, authorities shared an image of the iconic Mystery Machine van parked outside their station. While the vehicle appeared suspiciously on-brand, officials noted that they've already questioned the owner and found no solid connection to the case. They added with a smile: “Continue to be on the lookout for shady caretakers and don’t meddle if you see the suspect.”

Is This a Marketing Stunt?

Some observers have speculated whether this bizarre incident could be a viral marketing campaign tied to Netflix’s upcoming live-action *Scooby-Doo* series. Earlier this year, the streaming giant confirmed plans for a modern reimagining of the beloved franchise. The show will follow Shaggy, Daphne, Velma, and Freddy as they investigate a supernatural murder at a summer camp — joined, of course, by their famous four-legged companion.

While there’s no official link between the Tuscaloosa robbery and the new production, fans can't help but wonder if this real-life mystery might be the perfect promotional setup. Either way, one thing is clear: the line between fiction and reality just got a little more mysterious.
