The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the brink of unveiling its first major video game. CEO Travis Willingham has hinted that an announcement could be made "any day" now. This news was shared during an interview with Business Insider, where Willingham expressed excitement about the project but kept details like the game's title and its specific connection to the Critical Role universe under wraps. He emphasized that the development team is diligently working on the project, aiming to offer fans an interactive experience where they can influence the story and explore new narratives within the world of Exandria.
Willingham, who is not only an actor but also a star in Critical Role, co-founded the company with other well-known voice actors such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer. Since its start, Critical Role has expanded into a vast universe, with one of its most notable ventures being the Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.
The upcoming video game is set to be a standalone project within the Critical Role ecosystem. In a December 2024 interview with Rolling Stone, Willingham mentioned that the team was in the final stages of a multi-year effort to develop a video game spinoff. It remains uncertain whether the game will follow one of the group's established campaigns or introduce a fresh story within the Critical Role world.
The team had anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we move into March 2025, the announcement seems imminent. Willingham discussed the challenges and opportunities in the interactive entertainment industry with Rolling Stone, noting that their past collaborations have been exploratory steps to understand how Critical Role might fit into the broader gaming ecosystem.
While a release date for the Critical Role video game has yet to be disclosed, fans can look forward to more information on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
