The eagerly awaited sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Project Orion, promises to broaden the game's scope by introducing another city in addition to Night City. At Digital Dragons 2025 on May 20, Mike Pondsmith, the founder of R. Talsorian Games and a renowned game designer, provided some insights into the sequel's development.
Although Pondsmith's involvement in the sequel is less extensive than it was with Cyberpunk 2077, he remains closely connected to the project. "I see the scripts. Last week I was wandering around talking to different departments and seeing what they had like, ‘this is the new Cyberware, what do you think?’" he shared.
He also revealed that a new city, distinct from Night City, is in the works. "I remember looking at it and going, ‘I understand the feel that you’re going for, and this really does work, it doesn’t feel like Blade Runner, it feels more like Chicago gone wrong’. And I said, ‘yeah, I can see this working’," Pondsmith explained.
Meanwhile, CD Projekt Red (CDPR) has been actively recruiting for Cyberpunk 2, with a recent job listing for a Lead Encounter Designer. The role involves "help[ing] formulate solutions for and help[ing] create memorable gameplay encounters that will thrill and excite our players."
The job listing hints at groundbreaking features, with one of the daily responsibilities being to "Work in close collaboration with the systems design team to create the most realistic and reactive crowd system in any game to date."
While specifics about Project Orion remain under wraps, the insights from Pondsmith and CDPR's ongoing recruitment efforts suggest that Cyberpunk 2 will elevate the series' renowned world-building and storytelling to new heights.
New Footage for Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 Port
In related news, CDPR has shared new footage of Cyberpunk 2077 optimized for the Nintendo Switch 2, showcasing the studio's efforts to tailor the game for the upcoming handheld console. CDPR's website features over 37 minutes of B-roll videos showcasing the game in action on the Switch 2.
Despite these efforts, reports from Nintendo Switch 2 showcase events in New York and Paris earlier this year indicated performance issues, with Cyberpunk 2077 experiencing significant frame drops. Business Insider noted that "Such an intensive game playing on the Switch 2 is a fun novelty, but this definitely isn't the best way to play CyberPunk. I encountered lots of frame drops."
However, CDPR Engineer Tim Green expressed optimism about the port in an interview with Game File on April 25. "We haven’t had to fight with fitting into memory, and the speed of the data storage has helped alleviate some of those early streaming problems. This has allowed us to focus our attention on improving other things, and we’re very happy with the result," Green stated.
