If you align with Shu or Wei, a clash with Lu Bu is inevitable in Chapter 4 during the Battle of Xiapi. Finally, defeating him at the Battle of Hulao Gate unlocks the "The Strongest" trophy. More importantly, a post-game victory earns you the game's ultimate weapon, the halberd—a significant reward that makes the effort worthwhile.
Lu Bu’s First Phase
Before engaging Lu Bu, strategic preparation is key. Equip a weapon capable of inflicting multiple hits and staggering him. Battle Arts with low Bravery requirements, quick activation, and wide range are crucial. In my fight, I used Falcon Flurry, Mad Blade Rush, Absconding Slash, and Flying Dragon Slash. Accessories boosting health and defense, like Divine Bird’s Wing and Divine Turtle’s Shell, are essential for survival. Lu Bu hits incredibly hard, so maximizing your survivability is paramount. Finally, a weapon with a skill granting Bravery for Perfect Evades is highly beneficial, as evading will be your primary Bravery source.
Initially, Lu Bu rides his steed, Red Hare. This phase is relatively straightforward. He charges around, occasionally pausing. Exploit these pauses to unleash your Battle Arts, then retreat. His attacks, aside from Red Hare's devastating jump attack, have a limited area of effect, making evasion manageable. Once his health reaches 80%, he dismounts, and the real battle begins.
Lu Bu’s Second Phase
On foot, Lu Bu is a relentless force. His attacks are swift and unpredictable. He often displays a red aura during rapid movements, indicating invulnerability to stuns. During his charges, evade and prepare for subsequent attacks, as he typically charges in sets of three. If he charges without his spear, he attempts a grab—a devastating move easily avoided through evasion.
His most dangerous ability is signaled by an orange glow. With minimal warning, he unleashes three powerful arrows from a distance, three times, potentially eliminating your health. Here, Absconding Slash proves invaluable, allowing you to cancel this attack from a distance. Close-range Battle Arts are ill-advised; they will likely result in your demise. Keep your Musou gauge charged for emergencies; the invincibility it provides can be life-saving.
During this phase, Lu Bu is surprisingly susceptible to juggling. A series of well-timed attacks quickly replenishes your Battle Arts, accelerating the depletion of his Fortitude meter. Maintain close proximity for better reaction time to his attacks. Remember: evasion is your best friend.
Lu Bu’s Final Phase
Upon depleting a significant portion of his health, Lu Bu enters his Musou Rage, signifying the final phase. He becomes unstaggable and unleashes an unrelenting barrage of attacks. The objective is to deplete his Fortitude before he executes his Musou attack. Due to his invulnerability to stuns, utilize all available resources: Musou attacks, Battle Arts—everything to overwhelm him. If he lands his Musou Attack, he immediately reactivates it, forcing a restart of the phase. Successfully breaking his Fortitude here secures your victory.
