A new Street Fighter movie is gearing up for battle, and it has found its director. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kitao Sakurai, known for his work on the wildly comedic The Eric Andre Show, has been tapped to helm the upcoming film adaptation of Street Fighter for Legendary Entertainment. Capcom, the creator of the iconic fighting game franchise, is said to be "deeply involved" in the project, which is slated for a release on March 20, 2026.
This latest attempt to bring Street Fighter to the big screen follows the infamous 1994 film, which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile, Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li, and the late Raul Julia as M. Bison. While it may not have been a critical darling at the time, it has since become a cult classic among fans.
Details on casting for the new film are still under wraps, but fans can likely anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life once again. Initially, the project was set to be directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, known for their work on Talk to Me, but they left the project last summer. The selection of Sakurai, with his background in absurdist comedy, suggests that Legendary might be steering the film towards a more humorous and unconventional take on the Street Fighter universe. As a fan of the game's more whimsical elements, this direction is certainly intriguing.
While we wait for more news on the film, fans can dive into the latest installment of the franchise, Street Fighter 6, which recently introduced Mai Shiranui as a new fighter. For more on the game, check out our comprehensive Street Fighter 6 review.
