The curtains have fallen on Evil Dead: The Game, an asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the beloved action horror franchise. Launched in 2022 across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game garnered an impressive 8/10 rating from IGN, praised for its thrilling cat-and-mouse gameplay, albeit with some rough edges reflective of its source material's horror/comedy essence.
Despite the release of a Game of the Year Edition the following year, the game struggled to maintain player engagement. The cancellation of the Nintendo Switch version in September 2023, coupled with the halt in content development, marked the beginning of its decline. Now, three years post-launch, Evil Dead: The Game has been removed from digital storefronts by its publisher, Saber Interactive. However, the servers will remain active, ensuring that current owners can continue their gameplay experience.
Saber Interactive announced the delisting on the game's Steam page, stating:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The decision has been met with a wave of negative reviews on the game's Steam page, with many players expressing their disappointment and declaring the game effectively "dead." Despite this, the game maintains an overall 'mixed' user review rating. One player, with over 380 hours logged, left a positive review, acknowledging the fun times and stating, "The end is nigh... It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that."
Saber Interactive, known for last year's successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is not slowing down. The studio is actively developing several licensed movie games, including John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, and an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game. Additionally, Turok: Origins and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 are also in the pipeline, promising more exciting titles for fans to look forward to.
