The PlayStation Portal is Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory designed for the PS5. Resembling an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen, it transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. It retains all the beloved features of the DualSense, such as haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in place of the touchpad. While it can stream games outside your home, you'll need a very stable and fast internet connection. Remember, the PS Portal isn't a standalone device; it requires a PS5 to operate.

Update: You no longer need a PS5 to play games on the PS Portal. Sony has introduced a feature allowing owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service, bypassing the need for a PS5. This means you can access over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. To take advantage of this, you'll need a subscription to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 per month—a far more appealing option than buying a $500 console and additional games.

It's worth noting that the PlayStation Portal isn't the only way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home. You can achieve similar functionality using the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device or other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setup can be more complex, and you'll miss out on some DualSense features.

PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy

"The PlayStation Portal surprised me in the best way possible. Initially skeptical, I found it to be a much better experience than using a phone with a clip-on controller. Its seamless functionality and the freedom to play my PS5 games anywhere with decent WiFi coverage are game-changers, especially when competing for TV time at home. However, it's not a standalone device; you need a PS5 to use it. The lack of WiFi access requiring a web browser login and no Bluetooth audio support are notable drawbacks. Despite these, it's an excellent device for PS5 owners looking to enjoy handheld gaming or needing an alternative to the household TV."
