Microsoft Delays Fable to 2026, Unveils New Gameplay Footage
Microsoft has pushed back the release of its highly anticipated Fable reboot from 2025 to 2026, but offered a glimpse of exciting new gameplay to soften the blow. Developed by Playground Games (creators of the Forza Horizon series), this Fable represents a fresh start for the beloved Xbox franchise, originally conceived by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios.
Xbox's Craig Duncan, head of Xbox Game Studios, reassured fans in the latest Xbox Podcast that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his complete faith in Playground Games, citing their proven track record with the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series. Duncan highlighted the game's stunning visuals, a unique blend of British humor, and a breathtakingly realized version of Albion, the game's fantasy world. He stressed that the delay prioritizes delivering the best possible gaming experience.

A 50-second pre-alpha gameplay trailer accompanied the delay announcement. The footage showcased various aspects of the game, including combat sequences featuring a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, a two-handed sword, and a fireball spell. It also included city exploration, horseback riding through a fantastical forest, and the classic Fable tradition of kicking a chicken. The trailer provides a strong indication of Playground Games' vision and the impressive visual fidelity mentioned by Duncan. A particularly intriguing scene showed the protagonist setting a sausage trap to lure a werewolf-like creature into combat.
Initially announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," the Fable reboot received further attention at the 2023 Xbox Game Showcase, presented by Richard Ayoade, and again during the June 2024 Xbox Showcase. This marks the first mainline Fable game since Fable 3 in 2010 and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming releases.
