Rumors are swirling that the popular MMORPG, FFXIV, might be making its way to mobile devices. A gaming industry insider, Kurakasis, alleges that Tencent Games and Square Enix are collaborating on a mobile port.
A History of Mixed Results
This wouldn't be Square Enix's first foray into mobile Final Fantasy games. However, past attempts have yielded mixed results. Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, while decent, didn't resonate with all fans, and Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia ultimately shut down. Adapting a complex MMORPG like FFXIV for mobile is a significant undertaking.
Unverified, But Not Entirely Outlandish
It's crucial to remember that this remains unconfirmed. Square Enix hasn't officially commented. However, past collaborations between Square Enix and Tencent lend some credence to the rumor. In 2018, the companies discussed potential collaborations, and in 2021, then-president Yosuke Matsuda alluded to ongoing projects with Tencent.
Kurakasis' leak provides no timeframe, leaving the project's status uncertain. A formal announcement may be some time away.
The Challenge of Mobile Adaptation
Successfully translating FFXIV's intricate mechanics to a mobile platform without compromising the depth players cherish will be a major challenge for Square Enix. A simplified, less engaging version could disappoint long-time fans.
