Pocketpair's Surprise Nintendo Switch Release Amidst Legal Battle
Pocketpair, the developer behind the controversial Palworld, unexpectedly launched its 2019 title, OverDungeon, on the Nintendo eShop. This action-card game, blending tower defense and roguelike elements, marks Pocketpair's first Nintendo Switch release. The launch, unannounced beforehand, coincided with a 50% discount lasting until January 24th.
The release comes amidst an ongoing legal dispute. In September 2024, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, alleging patent infringement related to Palworld's creature-capturing mechanics. Despite this, Pocketpair has remained active, releasing a major update for Palworld in December and now launching OverDungeon on a competitor's platform. The strategic decision to release OverDungeon on the Nintendo eShop, while Palworld is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, has sparked speculation online, with some suggesting it as a response to the ongoing lawsuit.
A History of Comparisons to Nintendo Titles
OverDungeon isn't the first Pocketpair game to draw comparisons to Nintendo properties. Their 2020 release, Craftopia, an RPG bearing resemblance to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, continues to receive updates. Meanwhile, Palworld, despite the lawsuit, continues to be actively supported, recently announcing a collaboration with Terraria.
The Ongoing Lawsuit and Future Plans
The legal battle between Pocketpair, Nintendo, and The Pokémon Company remains unresolved, with some experts predicting a protracted legal process. Beyond the Terraria crossover, Pocketpair has hinted at further Palworld developments in 2025, including a Mac port and a potential mobile release. The OverDungeon launch adds another layer of complexity to the situation, highlighting Pocketpair's continued ambition and strategic maneuvering in the face of significant legal challenges.
