Excitement is brewing among Nintendo fans with the latest filings hinting at a new GameCube controller, potentially designed for playing GameCube classics on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 through the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. According to Nintendo Life, a new FCC filing by Nintendo for a "game controller" aligns with the Switch 2 and suggests it could be a wireless Bluetooth controller.
The internet sleuths over at Famiboards have delved into the filing and believe that one of the images shows a label location that perfectly matches the back of a GameCube controller, specifically behind the C-Stick. This has led to speculation that the controller might be more than just a Switch 2 Pro Controller and could be specifically designed for use with Nintendo's Switch Online service, which already offers wireless classic controllers for retro gaming.

This development has sparked discussions about a potential GameCube library being added to Nintendo Switch Online. Fans have long yearned for GameCube classics on the Switch, but so far, Nintendo has focused on re-releasing games from the NES, SNES, N64, Sega Genesis, and Game Boy on its subscription service. Could the Switch 2 finally bring the GameCube back in a significant way?
Nintendo Consoles
The Switch 2 was unveiled earlier in January with a brief trailer that confirmed its backwards compatibility features and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details, such as other games and the function of the mysterious new Joy-Con button, were left undisclosed. The Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some traction among fans.
Last month, a Nintendo patent suggested that the Switch 2's Joy-Con controllers could be attached upside down. The Switch 2 is expected to use gyro mechanics similar to those in smartphones without screen lock. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which used rails for the Joy-Cons, the new controllers will feature magnets, allowing them to be attached on either side. This change, while minor on the hardware front, could allow players to customize the placement of buttons and ports. If implemented, this flipping ability could lead to innovative gameplay mechanics.

Analysts predict that the Switch 2 will be priced at around $400, though some speculate it could reach up to $500. June has been mentioned as a potential release month. While much remains unknown about the Switch 2, Nintendo has scheduled a Direct for April 2, where more details about the console will be revealed.
In the meantime, fans can enjoy a taste of GameCube nostalgia with Metroid Prime Remastered, available on the current Nintendo Switch.
