George R.R. Martin Hails 'Knight' as Faithful Adaptation

Author George R.R. Martin has stated that the "Game of Thrones" spin-off series, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," is as faithful to the source material as any fan could reasonably expect.

In his latest blog update, Martin mentioned that HBO has completed filming for the six-episode season, which is scheduled to debut later this year—potentially in the fall, though no exact release window was confirmed. Unlike the earlier spin-off "House of the Dragon," Martin expressed strong enthusiasm for this adaptation.

“I've now watched all six episodes—the final two as rough cuts—and I was truly impressed,” Martin shared. “Dunk and Egg have always been dear to me, and the casting for their characters is absolutely perfect. The rest of the ensemble is just as impressive. Fans are in for a treat when they’re introduced to the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.”

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” adapts “The Hedge Knight,” the first installment in the Dunk & Egg novellas. According to Martin, it remains remarkably faithful to the original story, in line with what a reasonable person—like himself—would want.

Martin clarified, though, that the series might not satisfy viewers looking for non-stop action. “There’s certainly a major fight sequence, as thrilling as any out there, but you won’t see dragons, epic battle scenes, or White Walkers,” he explained. “It’s more of a character-driven story, focusing on themes like honor, duty, and what chivalry truly represents.”

Starring Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen—better known as Dunk and Egg—the show has already released early photos and a teaser trailer, with its premiere still a few months away.

Martin wrapped up his blog by briefly addressing the long-awaited novel, “The Winds of Winter”: “We’ll begin adapting ‘The Sworn Sword,’ the next Dunk & Egg tale. And once I wrap up ‘The Winds of Winter,’ I’ll start working on ‘The Village Hero’ and other adventures awaiting our heroes. I’m sure you won’t let me forget.”
