NetEase's collectible card game, Harry Potter: Magic Awakened, is shutting down in select regions. The end-of-service (EOS) date for the Americas, Europe, and Oceania is October 29th, 2024. Players in Asia and some MENA regions can continue playing.
Initially released in China in September 2021, the game saw a strong launch. A global release followed in June 2022, but it failed to maintain initial momentum.
Why the shutdown? While the game initially impressed with its Clash Royale-style gameplay and captivating Hogwarts atmosphere, it ultimately underperformed. Reddit discussions highlight player frustration over a shift towards pay-to-win mechanics. A controversial reward system rework penalized skilled free-to-play players, slowing progression and discouraging continued engagement.
The game has already been removed from app stores in affected regions (August 26th, 2024). If you're in a region where the game remains available, you can still experience its dorm life, classes, secrets, and wizard duels.
