IGN has exciting news for fans of Hollow Knight: Silksong—the much-anticipated game will be playable at Australia's national museum of screen culture, ACMI, in Melbourne starting September 18, 2025. Developed by the Adelaide-based studio Team Cherry, Hollow Knight: Silksong has been at the top of the Steam wishlist chart for years and remains one of the most eagerly awaited indie games globally. While the exact release date remains elusive, with only a vague 2025 window announced so far, this upcoming playable demo at ACMI offers a tantalizing glimpse into the game's near future.
Silksong will be a highlight of the Game Worlds exhibition at the Melbourne museum, which will also feature displays exploring the game's design and artistic direction. This event promises to give fans an in-depth look at the hundreds of sprites animating Hornet’s movements and attacks, as well as the logic behind the game's challenging boss fights.

Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell, co-curators at ACMI, expressed their excitement: “Since Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game's artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!”
As part of the announcement, ACMI shared a sprite sheet from Silksong, one of several design elements that will be showcased in the Game Worlds exhibition. The image was provided to IGN with permission.
With the playable demo set for September, fans are hopeful that a full release might happen sooner, perhaps even in August. The anticipation continues to build as Silksong made a brief appearance at Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct last month, hinting at an updated 2025 release window. This was the most significant update on the game in years, although it only offered a few seconds of new gameplay.
Originally announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, Silksong will also be available on Xbox (and Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Team Cherry has been known for its mysterious teases, such as the recent chocolate cake recipe at the start of 2025, leading fans to speculate about a potential re-reveal. As the excitement grows, Hollow Knight: Silksong remains a game to watch closely.
