The popular mobile beat 'em up ARPG, King of Fighters ALLSTAR, will be shutting down on October 30th, 2024. This unexpected announcement, made via Netmarble's official forums, reveals that in-app purchases have already been disabled.
King of Fighters ALLSTAR enjoyed a successful run of over six years, boasting numerous collaborations with prominent fighting game franchises. Its closure, however, seems to stem at least partly from a depletion of characters to adapt from the source material, the King of Fighters series, according to Netmarble's developer notes. While this is likely not the sole reason, it offers some insight into the decision.
What's Next?
The shuttering of King of Fighters ALLSTAR sadly continues a trend of long-running mobile live-service games closing their doors in 2024. This underscores the challenges of maintaining these titles and suggests that even in the thriving mobile gaming market, financial sustainability remains a significant hurdle for some developers.
