Every superhero tale needs its antagonist, and in Captain America: Brave New World, fans were introduced to The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. The character underwent enhancements through practical effects and makeup, resulting in a visibly mutated appearance. However, this design deviated somewhat from the comic book version.
Blue Whale Studios, the special effects team behind The Leader's look for the MCU film, recently shared their initial concept for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which stayed truer to the comics. Based in Atlanta, the studio originally envisioned a sickly aesthetic for the character. Their Instagram post showcased this early design, featuring an enlarged head and pale green skin. While this version remained relatively simple compared to the final iteration, it captured the essence of the character’s first comic book appearance. The post also included a video demonstrating the application of prosthetics on Nelson, offering a fascinating glimpse into the creative process.
Blue Whale Studios explained, "We were initially tasked with designing and applying the practical makeup for The Leader on the incomparable Tim Blake Nelson in Captain America: Brave New World. Like many projects in filmmaking, the narrative evolved, and during reshoots, the creative vision changed. Although our version wasn’t featured in the final cut, we’re incredibly proud of the work we accomplished."
Inspired by the original comic art, the studio aimed to create a design that felt authentic yet modern. They emphasized the technical success of the final makeup, ensuring comfort and ease for the actor—a testament to their exceptional craftsmanship.
Interestingly, this original design mirrored The Leader’s debut in the Marvel comic universe in 1964’s Tales to Astonish #62. Even the final version of the character aligns more closely with his more recent depictions in Immortal Hulk (2018).
The Leader first surfaced as a potential MCU villain in 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner’s gamma-ray-infused blood. Initially human, time transformed him into the character seen at the beginning of Brave New World.
Last year, reports indicated Captain America: Brave New World was undergoing reshoots to integrate Giancarlo Esposito’s new villain, Sidewinder, leader of the Serpent Society. Additionally, Seth Rollins confirmed his role was removed due to extensive script revisions and reshoots.
Stay tuned for the film's release, and catch the intriguing evolution of The Leader's character design.
