Nexus Mods Bans Donald Trump Marvel Rivals Mod Due to Sociopolitical Concerns
A recently uploaded Donald Trump mod for the popular game, Marvel Rivals, has been removed from Nexus Mods, a leading platform for video game modifications. The removal, reportedly due to violations of Nexus Mods' policies against sociopolitically charged content, has sparked discussion among players.
Marvel Rivals, a hero shooter boasting millions of players since its release, allows for extensive character modification. Players have created various mods, ranging from alternate skins based on Marvel comics and films to crossovers with other franchises like Fortnite. The now-removed mod replaced the model of Captain America with Donald Trump, generating considerable online attention, including searches for a corresponding Joe Biden mod. Both mods are currently inaccessible on Nexus Mods.
The ban aligns with Nexus Mods' 2020 policy prohibiting mods related to US sociopolitical issues, implemented amidst the highly contested presidential election. While many players on social media anticipated the ban, citing the incongruity of Trump's likeness with Captain America's character, others expressed dissatisfaction with the platform's stance on political content. This isn't an isolated incident; although many similar mods have been removed, Trump-related mods persist in games like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and XCOM 2.
NetEase Games, the developer of Marvel Rivals, has yet to comment on the use of character mods, including those featuring controversial figures. The company is currently focused on addressing other game-related issues, such as bug fixes and resolving wrongful account bans.
