NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stopped a dedicated player from creating their own playable Doctor Octopus.
Reddit user WickedCube recently shared a 30-second gameplay video showcasing a surprisingly polished, fan-made Doctor Octopus for Marvel Rivals. The footage, seemingly from a testing environment, depicts a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner suspended in mid-air, with Doctor Octopus, complete with eight arms, manipulating the environment.

The character model, while rough around the edges, is instantly recognizable. Doc Ock's abilities include "Havoc Claw" (melee) and "Wrecking Grip" (ranged), allowing him to magnetically propel himself around obstacles, effectively granting him flight near stable structures. The video, which has garnered over 16,000 upvotes, demonstrates a well-conceived and playable character created entirely by one individual.
WickedCube, an indie game developer, explained their inspiration: Doc Ock's unique tentacle-based abilities present a significant development challenge, rarely seen fully realized in 3D playable characters. A recent PSN outage and inspiring fan art provided the final push.
It all started when PSN was down and I couldn’t play Marvel Rivals… I thought, ‘Since I can't play right now, why not make it myself?’
The overwhelmingly positive response has encouraged WickedCube to share their process through a future YouTube tutorial series and open-source the code on GitHub, making playable versions available on Itch.io.
NetEase will release two official characters, Human Torch and The Thing, this Friday, continuing their impressive post-launch momentum. However, the community's enthusiasm for WickedCube's Doc Ock highlights the vast potential within Marvel's universe. WickedCube is already developing concepts for other characters, including Nightcrawler and Professor Xavier.
Marvel Rivals' Season 1 mid-season update arrives tomorrow, February 21st, including the new heroes, balance adjustments, and other gameplay enhancements.
