NetEase Games Issues Warning: Marvel Rivals Modders Face Bans
NetEase Games, developer and publisher of the popular team shooter Marvel Rivals, has issued a stern warning to players utilizing mods. The company explicitly stated that any modification of the game, regardless of type (cosmetic or performance-enhancing), violates the terms of service and risks a permanent ban.
This warning follows the release of Season 1, which included hero adjustments, the addition of Invisible Woman and Mister Fantastic to the playable roster (with Human Torch and The Thing slated for future updates), and a (quickly circumvented) anti-modding measure. Despite this initial deterrent, workarounds have emerged, allowing players to modify game assets. One such mod, available on Nexus Mods, bypasses the game's asset hash checks. Another notable mod transformed Mister Fantastic into One Piece's Luffy, highlighting the creative—and potentially risky—potential of modding.
While NetEase Games hasn't publicly confirmed any bans for modding yet, the company maintains its zero-tolerance policy as outlined in the game's terms of service. Although some mods have been removed from platforms like Nexus Mods, others, including a workaround with over 500 downloads, remain accessible.
The situation underscores the ongoing tension between modding communities and game developers. NetEase Games' clear warning leaves the future impact on players uncertain, though the risks of continued modding are now explicitly defined. The company's response to the prevalence of these workarounds remains to be seen.
