On January 19, TikTok temporarily halted its operations in the US, which unexpectedly affected Marvel Snap, a popular card game developed by Second Dinner Studios and released by Nuverse, a division of ByteDance, TikTok's parent company. Following a 24-hour outage, Marvel Snap is now back online, but full access is still being restored, with in-game purchases currently unavailable.
In response to this disruption, the developers are considering a change of publishers and plan to shift some services to internal resources, as stated in an official announcement on Platform X. This decision stems from political risks, as TikTok has been granted only a 90-day extension to divest 50% of its business to a local owner. Failure to meet this deadline could lead to reblocking of TikTok and its associated projects, including Marvel Snap.
Second Dinner Studios has promised to provide further updates soon. Despite the game's return, many players are reporting authorization issues, though PC users can still access it via Steam. The developers at Second Dinner were taken aback by the incident and are diligently working to fully restore the game. An official statement from Platform X reassures players, stating:
“Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress”.
A significant frustration for players was the lack of prior warning about the potential lockout, leading many to continue making in-game purchases unaware of the impending issue.
