Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility is "always there," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.

This remastered collection includes Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which introduced Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon – characters largely absent from subsequent entries beyond minor cameos. Matsumoto believes the collection's release will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience, potentially sparking enough interest for their inclusion in titles like Street Fighter 6. He emphasized that this would not only expand the roster but also provide Capcom with a richer pool of creative content.

Matsumoto also revealed that Capcom's plans for a new Versus title, and the re-release of other legacy fighting games with modern features like rollback netcode, are contingent on fan interest and various logistical factors, including collaborations with external parties. The producer highlighted the importance of re-releasing classic titles to revitalize the community and gauge demand for future projects.

The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself represents a long-held ambition, with Matsumoto noting years of discussions with Marvel to make the project a reality. While a new Versus game is a goal, Capcom is taking a measured approach, prioritizing the release of the collection and assessing fan reception before committing to further projects.

Matsumoto concluded by reiterating Capcom's desire to bring more legacy fighting games to modern platforms, acknowledging the challenges involved but expressing confidence that re-releasing classic titles is the best way to gauge future development priorities.
