Shift Up's Goddess of Victory: NIKKE Evangelion crossover fell short of expectations, according to a recent interview with the game's producer. The collaboration, released in August 2024, featured Rei, Asuka, Mari, and Misato in designs intended to be faithful to the original anime. However, this faithfulness came at a cost.
The Design Dilemma:
Shift Up's initial character designs were deemed too suggestive by Evangelion's creators, leading to alterations that, while acceptable to the licensors, failed to resonate with players. The toned-down aesthetics lacked the appeal of the original concepts.
Player Disappointment:
The issue wasn't solely the character designs. Players found little incentive to spend on limited-time characters and costumes, particularly Asuka's gacha skin, which offered minimal visual differences from her standard model. The overall event felt drawn-out and uninspired.
A Dilution of Identity?:
The criticism points to a larger concern: recent collaborations have diluted NIKKE's core identity—its distinctive, over-the-top anime aesthetic and compelling narrative. Players felt the Evangelion event didn't align with these strengths.
Looking Ahead:
Shift Up acknowledges the feedback and promises improvements in future collaborations. The hope is that upcoming content will recapture the game's original spirit and deliver the high-quality experiences players expect. Meanwhile, both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Goddess of Victory: NIKKE are available on the Google Play Store. Let's hope Shift Up can learn from this experience and deliver more engaging crossovers.
