Recent filings for the Nintendo Switch 2 confirm Near Field Communication (NFC) support, indicating that Amiibo functionality will likely be included in the next-generation console.
As reported by The Verge, Federal Communication Commission (FCC) documents verify that the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) feature is positioned in the Switch 2’s right Joy-Con, consistent with the original model. This raises the question of whether the upcoming console will support existing Amiibo figures that currently unlock in-game content.
The filings also confirm that the Switch 2 can be charged via either its bottom USB-C port or the newly added top port, a feature fans anticipated following the official console announcement. Additionally, the Switch 2 will support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) networks with up to 80MHz of bandwidth, an upgrade from the original Switch's Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac). Notably, the documents make no mention of Wi-Fi 7 or Wi-Fi 6E, as The Verge observed.
Lastly, while the Switch 2 itself remains rated for a maximum of 15V, the filings reference an AC adapter capable of delivering up to 20V, leaving the actual charging speed uncertain.
Last month, a Nintendo patent hinted that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con controllers might be attachable upside down. The new console appears to use gyro mechanics similar to how smartphones operate without screen rotation lock. Unlike the original Nintendo Switch, which used rails to secure the Joy-Cons, the new controllers are expected to use magnets, potentially allowing attachment on either side.
While this design change may not significantly impact hardware performance, it could offer players flexibility in positioning buttons, the headphone jack, and other features. If implemented in the final product, this reversible attachment capability might also enable innovative gameplay mechanics.

If the Nintendo Switch 2 operates as suggested by the patent, Nintendo is expected to fully detail the feature during a special Nintendo Direct presentation. The event is scheduled for 6am Pacific / 9am Eastern / 2pm UK time on April 2.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to launch soon, although Nintendo has not yet confirmed a specific release window. Some industry observers speculate a release between June and September, based on hands-on events scheduled through June and a statement from Greedfall 2 publisher Nacon indicating the console will arrive before September.
Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2 earlier in January with a short trailer that confirmed backwards compatibility and the addition of a second USB-C port. However, many details—such as additional launch titles and the function of the mysterious new button on the Joy-Con—were not disclosed, though the Joy-Con mouse theory has gained some attention.
