Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

Author : Nova Jan 26,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, developer Hemisphere Games has resurrected it with a completely revamped port.

For those unfamiliar, Osmos is a unique, award-winning puzzle where players absorb smaller organisms while avoiding becoming prey themselves. Its simple yet engaging gameplay made it a hit, but Android users had been unable to enjoy it until now.

Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos is back on Google Play, optimized for modern Android systems. Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became difficult to update following Apportable's closure. This resulted in the game's removal due to incompatibility with current devices. The new version addresses these issues with a ground-up rebuild.

If our enthusiastic reviews of Osmos (on both iOS and Android) and its numerous awards haven't convinced you, the gameplay trailer above should seal the deal. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; its gameplay would likely be viral on platforms like TikTok.

Osmos feels like a nostalgic gem, well worth revisiting. It represents a time when mobile gaming felt limitless, a feeling many hope to recapture. While Osmos stands out for its beautiful visuals, there are many other excellent mobile puzzle games available.
