Steady Progress on The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, Says Obsidian Entertainment CEO
Obsidian Entertainment Confident About Upcoming New Titles
Obsidian Entertainment is making smooth progress on The Outer Worlds 2, the next installment in their popular space action RPG series, according to CEO Feargus Urquhart. While much of the studio's focus remains on Avowed, Urquhart reassures fans that The Outer Worlds 2 is "going really well."
In a recent interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube, Urquhart shared his confidence in the team behind The Outer Worlds 2. "I'm impressed with the team," he stated. "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I've actually been really impressed by it."
Urquhart also discussed the challenges Obsidian faced, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic and after their acquisition by Microsoft. At the time, the studio was juggling multiple projects, including Grounded and Pentiment, which stretched resources thin. "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half," he admitted. There were even discussions about halting work on The Outer Worlds 2 to focus solely on Avowed. However, the studio decided to continue with their original plans and develop all the games.
"We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment," Urquhart recalled.
Reflecting on their decision to continue, Urquhart noted that both Grounded and Pentiment "turned out awesome." He also shared that Avowed is "looking great," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." Although no specific details about the game content were revealed, with Avowed now scheduled for 2025, it's speculated that similar adjustments might be made to Obsidian's other projects.
The Outer Worlds 2 was first announced in 2021, but updates have been scarce since then. Urquhart acknowledged the possibility of a launch delay, similar to what happened with Avowed. However, he emphasized the studio's commitment to delivering high-quality games. "We will get there with all these games," he said. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we're going to get there, and I think that's been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are expected to be available on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
