Bad news for Switch players eager to dive into Palworld: a Switch version is currently off the table. This early access survival game, featuring collectible Pokémon-esque creatures, saw a surge in popularity upon its 2024 launch, but interest has since cooled. However, a major update could reignite the flames.
The upcoming Sakurajima Update (June 27th) is Palworld's most significant update yet, adding a new island, Pals, bosses, a higher level cap, and dedicated Xbox servers. This substantial update is expected to draw players back, but unfortunately, the fun is currently limited to PC and Xbox.
While Palworld is currently an Xbox console exclusive (with PlayStation plans in the works), a Switch port is unlikely. Pocketpair's Takuro Mizobe cited "technical reasons" in a Game File interview (via VGC), suggesting the Switch's hardware limitations. This doesn't rule out future Nintendo consoles, however.
Palworld and Nintendo: A Question of Power and Pokemon?
The upcoming Switch 2, with its expected power boost, could potentially run Palworld. The game's current availability on the aging Xbox One seems to support this. However, Palworld's arguably derivative nature – a "twisted" take on the Pokémon formula – might prevent its release on a Nintendo platform.
The future of Palworld on Nintendo consoles remains uncertain. Nevertheless, portable play is still an option. Palworld reportedly runs smoothly on the Steam Deck, offering a mobile alternative for PC gamers. And if rumors of an Xbox handheld prove true, Palworld's portability could expand further.
