Persistent Shortage of PS5 Disc Drives Continues to Plague Gamers
Since the November 2024 launch of the PS5 Pro, a significant shortage of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives has persisted, frustrating gamers seeking to add disc functionality to their new consoles. The PS5 Pro, unlike its predecessors, lacks a built-in disc drive, making the previously released external drive a necessary—and increasingly scarce—accessory.
The problem is exacerbated by scalpers, who are acquiring drives in large quantities from retailers like PS Direct (both US and UK storefronts are consistently sold out) and reselling them at exorbitant prices. This mirrors the challenges faced during the initial PS5 launch in 2020. While some third-party retailers (e.g., Best Buy, Target) occasionally receive stock, these sporadic drops are quickly overwhelmed by demand.
Sony's silence on the matter is notable, especially given the company's proactive approach to PS5 production during the pandemic. The added cost of the external drive ($80 from official sources) further compounds the issue, especially when combined with the already high price of the PS5 Pro. The lack of a built-in drive has been a point of contention since the console's September unveiling.
The current situation offers little relief for consumers. With scalpers driving up prices and supply remaining critically low, PlayStation fans are left with limited options beyond waiting for market conditions to improve—a prospect that currently appears distant.
