If you're a DC fan, you've probably heard about the Absolute Universe, a bold new publishing initiative under DC’s All In banner. Spearheaded by acclaimed writers Scott Snyder and Joshua Williamson, this reimagined universe breaks free from traditional continuity constraints, offering fresh, grounded takes on some of DC's most iconic heroes—Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and more.
Launched in late 2024 as a follow-up to the Absolute Power storyline, the Absolute Universe kicks off a brand-new narrative status quo that flips familiar character origins on their heads. If you’re curious about what’s going on across these titles and how to read them in order, we’ve got you covered with this comprehensive 2025 reading guide.
Note: Don’t confuse Absolute Universe comics with DC’s “Absolute Editions”—those high-end omnibus collections like Absolute Batman: The Long Halloween or Absolute Watchmen. They’re entirely separate!
Recommended Reading Order for Absolute Universe
To fully understand the evolving storylines, follow this suggested sequence and then continue reading each title in its release order. Most core Absolute series run six issues and will be collected into trade paperbacks later.
1. DC All In Special #1 – Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Wes Craig, Daniel Sampere
Start your journey here. This oversized one-shot lays the foundation for the entire Absolute Universe, setting up key themes and plot threads before diving into individual hero stories.
2. Absolute Batman #1 – Scott Snyder & Nick Dragotta
Published in October 2024, this is where the Absolute Universe officially begins. It presents a raw, stripped-down version of Bruce Wayne—one who isn't wealthy, lacks the Batcave, and has no Alfred. A gritty origin that redefines the Dark Knight from the ground up.
3. Absolute Wonder Woman #1 – Kelly Thompson & Hayden Sherman
Released shortly after Absolute Batman #1, this issue offers a striking reinterpretation of Diana. Gone is the traditional Themyscira—here, Wonder Woman emerges as a battle-hardened Amazon warrior on a quest for meaning and purpose.
4. Absolute Superman #1 – Jason Aaron & Rafa Sandoval
From celebrated writer Jason Aaron comes a grounded take on Clark Kent. Stripped of his usual advantages, this Superman must find strength in humanity, not just power.
5. Absolute Flash #1 – Jeff Lemire & Nick Robles
Kicking off the 2025 wave, this Flash series introduces Wally West navigating the Speed Force without any of the usual support systems. His struggle to control his powers sets him on a solo path unlike anything seen before.
6. Absolute Martian Manhunter #1 – Deniz Camp & Javier Rodriguez
This title marks one of the biggest reinventions in the line. FBI agent John Jones finds himself slowly overtaken by an alien presence, pulling him into a cosmic mystery beyond his comprehension.
7. Absolute Green Lantern #1 – Al Ewing & Jahnoy Lindsay
Bringing together Hal Jordan, John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Jo Mullein, this issue explores what happens when a massive Green Lantern crash lands in a small American town—sparking tension among the heroes and local authorities alike.
Upcoming Collected Editions
As of now, the first three volumes have confirmed release dates:
- Absolute Batman Vol. 1: The Zoo – August 5
- Absolute Wonder Woman Vol. 1: The Last Amazon – August 12
- Absolute Superman Vol. 1: The Last Dust of Krypton – August 19
While the full scope of Absolute Universe continues to unfold, it’s likely these interconnected stories will lead to a larger event by the end of 2025—or possibly even beyond. With future plans potentially involving more characters, this is only the beginning of DC’s boldest reimaginings yet.
