The Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB SSD Is On Sale Today: Great for PS5 and Gaming PCs

Author : George Apr 08,2025

Samsung's latest SSD, the Samsung 990 Evo Plus 2TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe solid state drive, is currently on sale for an unbeatable price of $129.99. This deal is even better than what was available during Black Friday, offering a $40 saving compared to the Samsung 990 Pro. For most gamers, the performance difference between these two models is negligible, making the 990 Evo Plus an excellent choice for both gaming PCs and PlayStation 5 consoles.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus is a standout drive, perfect for enhancing your gaming experience on both your PC and PS5. It surpasses Sony's minimum speed requirements for the PS5, delivering impressive sequential read speeds of up to 7,250MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,300MB/s. While it's not as fast as the 990 Pro, it's significantly quicker than the non-Pro version of the 990 Evo. The key difference from the 990 Pro is that the 990 Evo Plus is a DRAM-less drive. However, this doesn't impact PS5 performance, and for gaming PCs, it uses HMB (host memory buffer) to compensate, drawing a minimal amount of RAM from your system memory. This means gamers won't notice any performance difference between the two.

The Samsung 990 Evo Plus does not come with a preinstalled heatsink, but its new single-sided design is power-efficient and generates less heat than older SSDs. This makes it suitable for use in a PS5 without thermal throttling, though adding a heatsink for extra peace of mind is an option that costs just an additional $7.
