It looks like Buffy might be slaying again at Hulu.
According to Variety, a reboot of the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer is on the brink of becoming a reality at Hulu, with the beloved star Sarah Michelle Gellar in discussions to return as the legendary vampire-slaying hunter. Although the new series will focus on a fresh Slayer, Gellar is set to appear as a recurring character, adding a nostalgic touch to the reboot.
Adding to the excitement, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao, acclaimed for her work on Nomadland and Eternals, is in talks to helm the project and serve as an executive producer. The writing and showrunning duties will be handled by Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman, bringing their expertise to the table. Notably, the original series creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in this reboot.
While Whedon oversaw the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer series and the movie it was based on, allegations of a toxic work environment during the production of both the TV show and its spinoff, Angel, have surfaced.
Plot details for the reboot remain under wraps, but it is confirmed that the series will center on a new Slayer, with the potential for Gellar to reprise her iconic role as Buffy.
The original series followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen by destiny to fight against demons, vampires, and other supernatural threats. She was supported by her loyal friends Willow Rosenberg and Xander Harris, along with her Watcher, Rupert Giles.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer originally aired from 1997 to 2003, spanning seven seasons. During this time, it also spawned a spinoff titled Angel. The story continued officially through a series of canon comic books, keeping the legacy alive for fans.
