Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu confirmed on X/Twitter that he's actively engaging with rights holders to bring the video game to the big screen.
Initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, the project vanished a year later. Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, only to see the Hollywood machine stall the production. His comments highlighted the unpredictable nature of Hollywood development.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor in securing the rights or otherwise reviving the project remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs, released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen's undercover operation within a formidable Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed, earning an 8/10 rating from IGN, the game surprisingly lacked sequels. Liu's involvement could change that.
