Sony is set to shift its focus to the PlayStation 5 by removing PlayStation 4 games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials monthly games and the Games Catalog starting in January 2026. This strategic move was announced in a PlayStation Blog post alongside the reveal of February 2025's monthly titles.
"As we shift to PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a key benefit and will only be occasionally offered for PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog," Sony stated. This change will not impact the monthly titles that players have already claimed. However, titles within the Games Catalog will remain playable until they are rotated out of the catalog during the monthly refresh.
Sony emphasized its commitment to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to "continue to evolve the experience of PlayStation Plus and optimize the benefits you receive, including exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, online game save storage, and more." As part of this evolution, Sony aims to provide new PS5 titles on a monthly basis for subscribers to enjoy.

The PlayStation 4, launched in 2013, has been succeeded by the PlayStation 5, which debuted in 2020. Sony noted that "many of our players are currently playing on PS5 and have shifted toward redeeming and accessing PS5 titles," reflecting the growing demand for next-generation gaming experiences.
While it remains uncertain whether Sony will reclassify PS4 games into the Classics Catalog, which currently features ports and remasters from earlier PlayStation consoles, any changes to the PS Plus Games Catalog are expected to be announced closer to the implementation date.
