1047 Games, the creators of the popular arena shooter, has unveiled Splitgate 2, a highly anticipated sequel set to launch in 2025. This article delves into the exciting features and improvements promised in the Sol Splitgate League.
Splitgate 2: A 2025 Launch
Familiar Foundations, Fresh Experience
A cinematic trailer released on July 18th showcased Splitgate 2, promising a fresh take on the original free-to-play hit. CEO Ian Proulx emphasized a long-term vision: "building a game that can last a decade or more." This ambition led to a re-evaluation of core mechanics, aiming for a more refined and engaging gameplay loop. Hilary Goldstein, Head of Marketing, highlighted a redesigned portal system, stating the goal was to "ensure true Portal Gods could excel, but that no one had to constantly portal to taste victory."
Developed using Unreal Engine 5 and remaining free-to-play, Splitgate 2 will incorporate a new faction system. While retaining familiar elements, the developers promise a completely revitalized experience. The game will be available on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One in 2025.
Known for its unique blend of Halo and Portal mechanics, Splitgate allows players to strategically utilize wormholes for traversal and tactical advantages. The original game's success, fueled by a well-received demo, led to significant server upgrades to handle its immense popularity. After a period of early access, the original Splitgate officially launched in September 2022, with the developers subsequently announcing a shift to developing Splitgate 2.
New Factions, Maps, and More
The trailer introduced the Sol Splitgate League and three distinct factions, promising enhanced gameplay depth. Each faction offers a unique playstyle: Aeros (dashing mobility), Meridian (tactical time manipulation), and Sabrask (brute force). Importantly, Splitgate 2 will not be a hero shooter in the style of Overwatch or Valorant.
While detailed gameplay will be revealed at Gamescom 2024 (August 21-25), the trailer showcased impressive visuals, confirming the authenticity of maps, weapons, and the return of dual-wielding.
Expanding the Lore: Splitgate 2 Comics
Confirming the absence of a single-player campaign, the developers announced a mobile companion app for lore enthusiasts. This app will feature comics, character cards, and a faction quiz to help players determine their ideal faction alignment.
